Key takeaways: shade above you and shade in front do different jobs
4 points
A roof sunshade covers the matching panoramic glass above the cabin; a windshield shade covers the front glass while parked.
Remove a windshield shade completely before driving and store it clear of pedals, controls and visibility.
Choose by vehicle generation, glass area and handling routine before choosing color or a version name.
Visible shade does not establish a UV percentage, a temperature reduction or a safe unattended cabin.
Research note: we reviewed Tesla’s US climate and cleaning guidance and TERVELIO’s current roof and windshield selections on October 7, 2026. We have not measured these shades for heat reduction, UV filtering, energy saving or physical fit.
A car parked at work may face the morning sun through the windshield. The same car on a weekend journey may have a passenger noticing the light above their seat. Those observations point to different glass areas and different daily routines. Start there rather than buying two shades simply because they appear together in a search.
This comparison helps you decide which job matters first, read the actual Model Y options and plan what happens when it is time to leave. It treats shading, climate control and supervision as separate responsibilities.
Compare the glass area and the routine
Question
Roof sunshade
Windshield sunshade
Where does it go?
Under the matching panoramic roof glass.
Across the matching front windshield.
Which everyday need starts the decision?
Coverage above occupants, subject to the product’s use instructions.
Front-glass coverage during outdoor parking.
What establishes the fit?
Roof outline, generation, panel arrangement and supplied retention method.
Windshield outline and the mirror/camera-area shape.
What routine does it add?
Correct fitting, checks and occasional removal or storage.
Putting it up at a stop and removing it before departure.
What must stay clear?
Relevant visibility, headroom, trim and normal cabin access.
Driver visibility, cameras and controls; remove it before moving.
What does it not establish?
A measured cabin-temperature or UV result.
A safe cabin for an unattended person or pet.
The shapes are not interchangeable. Do not fasten a windshield shade beneath the roof with improvised clips or use one roof panel as a front-glass cover. Their outlines, mounting methods and intended handling are different.
Read the Model Y option labels all the way through
The split roof-shade page offers more than one category. Roof choices identify refreshed Model Y or legacy Model Y, while two other choices explicitly name the windshield. The page title alone therefore does not tell you what the item selected in the basket will cover.
For the refreshed roof, the selector includes Ice-Crystal black or beige and Graphene black or greige labels. A legacy roof option is labeled Ice-Crystal beige. The same page lists black and silver windshield options. These are the offered version names and colors, not independent proof of fiber composition, heat conductivity or UV performance.
A separate Ice-Silk Windshield Sunshade page lists one Model Y windshield choice. “Ice-Silk” is the product name; it is not a measured cooling result. Match the actual glass shape and vehicle details instead of using a material-sounding label as the fit decision.
For one car, start with one correctly selected roof set for the roof job or one correctly selected windshield shade for the parked front-glass job. A two-panel roof set does not mean two full sets are needed. Choose both categories only when both jobs have a useful place in your routine.

Three everyday schedules that favor different choices
The outdoor workplace parking space
If the car usually faces direct light through the front glass for much of the day, a parked windshield routine is the relevant category to compare. Decide where the shade goes after removal before ordering. A simple sequence—park, put it up, remove it, store it—must suit the driver using the car, or the accessory may stay folded in the trunk.
The shared school-run car
A passenger’s overhead-light preference may point toward a roof option, after checking its configuration and permitted use. A shared windshield shade needs an agreed storage place so the next driver does not find it across the glass at departure. Keep the process the same for both drivers and remove it completely before any movement.
The weekend park or picnic stop
Everyone gets out, and the parked-car shade routine begins only after the vehicle is secured. On return, remove and store the windshield shade before leaving. Prepare the cabin using the applicable climate guidance where useful, but do not treat shade as a safe-temperature guarantee. The picnic plan should not involve leaving a child or pet unattended in the car.
A first-use check without improvised mounting
Identify the glass. Keep roof and windshield parts separate. Check the model, year, generation and full selected option.
Compare the shape. Look at the roof perimeter or front-glass outline and the surrounding features. Include the mirror and camera area in windshield photographs.
Inspect the contents. Match panels and supplied retainers to the actual instructions. Do not infer a universal clip count or placement from another version.
Use the supplied method. Work while safely parked and stop if a frame twists, a corner does not sit naturally or a piece needs force.
Check the completed arrangement. Relevant visibility and access must remain clear. Do not drive with a loose or sagging roof piece.
For the windshield, remove before departure. Put the shade in its planned storage place, clear of the driver’s area and controls.
Our split-roof preparation guide explains the separate fitting checks. If the selected shape is uncertain, ask about the actual configuration before turning a product comparison into an installation attempt.
Before buying or using
A useful answer
If the answer is unclear
Which glass and generation?
The selected label and actual vehicle shape agree.
Send the model, year and glass-area photograph.
What does this package include?
The panels, layers and mounting pieces are identified for that option.
Ask about that option rather than copying another kit’s instructions.
Where will the windshield shade be stored?
A dry, accessible place clear of the driver’s controls.
Check the actual folded size before relying on a pocket or under-seat space.
What result do you expect?
Coverage in the area named by the product.
Request product-specific evidence before relying on a numerical claim.
Keep shading, heat and supervision separate
Visible light coverage, UV filtering and cabin temperature are three different questions. A photograph can show a covered glass area, but it cannot supply a UV percentage or a particular temperature change. A measurement for another brand, another layer or the original vehicle glass does not transfer to this accessory.
Tesla’s hot-weather guidance describes preparing the cabin and parking in shade. Its climate-control chapter also explains operating limits and warns that a cabin can become dangerously hot even with Cabin Overheat Protection enabled. Never leave a child unattended, and do not rely on a shade to protect a person or pet in a parked car.
Make storage and care part of the decision
Remove the pieces using the intended method, not by pulling on adjacent vehicle trim. Follow each shade’s folding instructions and let damp layers dry before storing. The roof listing describes gentle dust removal and spot care; the windshield listing specifies keeping it dry and avoiding machine washing or sharp twisting. Do not assume the two products use an identical routine.
For the original glass, follow the vehicle’s cleaning instructions; do not scrape it with an abrasive tool. Keep a stored shade away from objects that can damage its surface or frame. In a shared car, the best storage place is one both drivers can find and use without moving another person’s belongings.
Common questions about roof and windshield sunshades
Which shade should I choose first?
Choose the glass area associated with the everyday need you have actually noticed. Overhead coverage points toward a correctly selected roof option; front-glass coverage during parking points toward a windshield option. Consider the handling routine as well as the shape. If you do not want to put up and remove a windshield shade at each stop, that matters to the decision. Buying both is not automatically the more useful starting point.
Can a windshield sunshade stay up while driving?
No. Remove it completely before moving the vehicle and store it where it cannot obstruct visibility, pedals, controls or access needed by the driver. Do not leave a partly folded shade against the glass or on the driver’s floor. In a shared car, agree on the same storage place and departure routine. Parked coverage is its job, and that job ends before the car starts moving.
Why are windshield choices listed on the roof-shade page?
The page groups several options, so the selected configuration is what tells you the intended glass area. Read the full label, including roof or windshield wording, vehicle generation and color. A roof-page title does not guarantee that the current basket selection is a roof set. Check the selected photograph and package description together before ordering, especially if you change the option after comparing colors or version names.
Does a darker or reflective shade block more UV?
Appearance alone does not supply a UV measurement. A dark surface, a reflective layer and visible glass coverage are not interchangeable evidence. If a UV percentage matters, ask for evidence tied to the exact product configuration and layer you are buying. Do not transfer a figure from the vehicle glass, another material or another brand. This guide compares location and routine; it does not rank these products by an unmeasured UV result.
Will either shade keep the parked cabin at a safe temperature?
Do not rely on that assumption. A shade is not a safe-temperature guarantee, and Tesla describes limits even for its parked-cabin climate features. Use the appropriate climate guidance and never leave a child unattended. A picnic or shopping stop needs a supervision plan, not an accessory-based promise. Keep the visible-light job separate from the temperature question and from responsibility for the people or pets traveling with you.
Can the same roof shade fit legacy and refreshed Model Y?
The reviewed roof listing separates those configurations, so choose the matching option and compare the actual roof shape. Do not infer interchangeability from similar colors or a shared product title. Record the model year and generation and photograph the relevant glass and trim when asking for help. A two-piece description tells you about a package format, not that the panels and retention arrangement match every Model Y.
Do I need two sets because the roof shade has two panels?
No. Panel count describes the contents of a selected set, while order quantity describes how many sets you buy. For one car, start with one correctly selected roof set if that is the job you need. Check the included layers and mounting pieces for that option before checkout. If you also need parked windshield coverage, that is a separate category decision rather than a reason to duplicate the roof package.
What if a corner sags or the folded shade will not fit its storage place?
For a roof piece that does not sit naturally, stop and check the configuration, orientation and supplied retention instructions; do not drive with a loose or sagging arrangement. For storage, measure the actual folded format and choose another appropriate place rather than forcing the frame into a small pocket. Send clear photographs if the shape or setup remains uncertain. Neither problem should be solved with improvised clips or sharp folding.
A practical next step
Notice the glass area, choose the routine you will use and compare one full option label. If the generation or shape is unclear, send TERVELIO the vehicle details and glass-area photo before ordering. The most useful shade is the right one for the right part of your day.
